Media Specialist Meeting

November 21, 2002

The first meeting of the Atlanta archdiocesan media specialists took place on November 21, 2002 at Christ the King School.

Robin Tanis gave a power point presentation on the St. Pius Summer Reading Program.  It is called ASPIRE and involved 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students.  Teachers sponsored a specific book and then held a book discussion in the fall.

There was a discussion on Georgia Public Broadcasting and Peachtree.  Schools that want to utilize the program can contact Jeff White at 404-685-2555 or JeffWhite@GPB.org to obtain a password.

A couple of the media specialists have signed up for the media tech class at Kennesaw that will start in June.

Angela Williams introduced the topic of an archdiocesan wide Battle of the Books.  Teams of 3 or 4 students from grades 3, 4 and 5 will compete at each individual school.  Winners from each grade level will go to compete at Our Lady of Victory (tentative) on April 3rd.  Angela already has a list of books and questions for this year’s competition.  Schools that are interested need to e-mail Angela by Friday, December 6th.  Students will be provided the list of books on December 9th.

Angela Williams talked about establishing a vertical type file for media specialists on general topics of professional interest.  This file could be kept in a central location and brought out at each media specialist meeting.  After discussion it was decided that a web page would be more efficient.  Robin Tanis and Laura Burell volunteered to start work on a web page.

Discussion took place on establishing a list serve for media specialists.  Laura Ayala volunteered to set this up.

There was a discussion on organizing the group in a more professional manner.  It was decided that there would be volunteer chairperson, a co-chairperson and a secretary.  Responsibility for the chairperson and co-chairperson would be to help finalize agendas for the meetings and to keep the group informed. The secretary would keep the minutes of each meeting.  For this year the chairperson would be Julie Hampton and co-chairperson would be Carolyn Chandler.  Laura Ayala volunteered to act as secretary.

Agendas for up coming meetings were discussed.  At each meeting media specialists would be prepared to share a booktalk or a lesson plan.  The next meeting will take place on January 23, 2003.  It will be held at Our Lady of Assumption.   The agenda will include discussion on the website, list serve, vendors, battle of the books and summer reading.  The spring meeting will be held on March 18th at Immaculate Heart of Mary and the agenda will include discussion of our subscription database.
